Landsat-7 ETM+ as an observatory for land cover Initial radiometric and geometric comparisons with Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper

چکیده
The Landsat-7 ETM+ sensor offers several enhancements over the Landsat-4,5 Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor, including increased spectral information content, improved geodetic accuracy, reduced noise, reliable calibration, the addition of a panchromatic band, and improved spatial resolution of the thermal band. In this paper, we present some initial comparisons between Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ imagery in order to quantify these improvements. We find that the ETM+ continues the record of TM observations, and, in many respects, substantially improves upon the earlier sensor. Specific improvements include lower spatial noise levels, improved information content, and geodetic accuracy of systematically corrected products to 50–100 m. These improvements are likely to have significant benefits for land-cover mapping and change detection applications. D 2001 Published by Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

Effects of Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper and Landsat 7 EnhancedThematic Mapper Plus radiometric and geometric calibrations andcorrections on landscape characterization
The Thematic Mapper (TM) instruments onboard Landsats 4 and 5 provide high-quality imagery appropriate for many different applications, including land cover mapping, landscape ecology, and change detection. Precise calibration was considered to be critical to the success of the Landsat 7 mission and, thus, issues of calibration were given high priority during the development of the Enhanced The...
متن کاملRadiometric cross-calibration of the Landsat-7 ETM+ and Landsat-5 TM sensors based on tandem data sets
Early in its mission, the Landsat-7 spacecraft was temporarily placed in a ‘‘tandem’’ orbit very close to that of the Landsat-5 spacecraft in order to facilitate the establishment of sensor calibration continuity between the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) sensors. The key period for the tandem configuration was June 1–4, 1999, during which hund...
متن کاملEffect of Spectral Change Width in Radiometric Normalization of Multitemporal Satellite Imagery Methodes Efficiency
Multitemporal satellite optical images of the same terrain are very applicable in monitoring and quantifying large scale land cover change over time. These images are confounded in terms of radiometric consistency due to differences in sensor calibration parameters, illumination, geometric condition and variation in atmospheric effects. To analyze these images, it is necessary to omit mentioned...
متن کاملRadiometric Cross Calibration of Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+)
This study evaluates the radiometric consistency between Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) using cross calibration techniques. Two approaches are used, one based on cross calibration between the two sensors using simultaneous image pairs, acquired during an underfly event on 29–30 March 2013. The other approach is based on using time seri...

The paper presents the results of an extended analysis of image data sets acquired during the tandem-orbit configuration in 1999 for the purposes of radiometric cross-calibration of the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) sensors. Earlier work focused on the tandem pair for the Railroad Valley Playa, Nevada (RVPN) site to tie down the Landsat-5 TM c...
